From a Customer:

“Our students love the Buddy Bench! They know that it’s a great place to go and sit when they don’t have a friend to play with. If anyone sees someone sitting alone on the bench, they go over and sit with them and visit. They can then invite them to come and play with them! It’s also a great “meeting place” for friends from different classes to find each other at recess time. I often hear kids say, ‘Meet me at the Buddy Bench’”. Leanne Ermer, Garner-Hayfield-Ventura Elementary School Counselor

2017 Buddy Bench Contest Winners!

Thank you for all the wonderful entries! It truly was a difficult job to choose a winner from all the applicants. It is so inspiring to read about the concern that school staff, parents, and community members have regarding the well-being of all students!

Divine Mercy Catholic School in Payne, Ohio sent in a wonderful story about a classmate who lost his battle with cancer. Anne G. said, “He was friends with every student in school. …the [Buddy Bench] will remind all of us the importance of making sure that every student has a friend and never feels lonely.” Congratulation Divine Mercy School!

Buffalo Elementary School in Buffalo, West Virginia is the winner of a Buddy Bench for their school. About the Buddy Bench, Denise M. writes, “It would give those students who are struggling daily – or just the ones having a rough day – a place to find a friend.” We know you will love your new Buddy Bench!

Dakota Elementary School on the Minot Air Force Base in North Dakota will have a new Buddy Bench on their playground very soon! Stacy P. writes, “It’s really hard to pick up and move knowing that the kids lose their friends. The buddy bench could help all kids that just moved make that new friend that much quicker and get use to their new environment.”

Holy Trinity Catholic School in Huron, South Dakota will have a new Buddy Bench. Ashley S. writes, “Last year our first grade teacher passed away at a young age due to cancer. She was a teacher full of light and kindness and one of her ideas had been to implement a Buddy Bench for our playground. Our school has been wanting to have one installed in her memory on our playground but have not been able to find funding to do so. This would be an amazing gift to our school and our students, both in remembering their beloved teacher and inspiring acts of kindness and friendship.”

Congratulations to Janesville-Waldorf-Pemberton School in Janesville, Minnesota! Jody N. writes, “I often hear after the fact that a student has been left out or is sitting alone in a bathroom during lunch to avoid peer interaction because of rejection.”  She went on to say that she looks forward to hearing more about kids having amazing days at school and less about the daily struggles of peer pressure, bullying, and isolation.

Congratulations to Pleasant Hill Elementary in Pleasant Hill, Iowa! Kindergarten teacher, Amanda H. told us that their school is really focusing on building relationships between students, staff, and families. She writes, “This bench would be AMAZING for our school because it would reinforce the power of kindness and caring for one another. Sometimes the children just don’t know the words to use to let others know they are feeling down.”

Congratulations to Elm Tree Academy, Leaf River Academy, and White Pine Academy in Deer Creek, MN! They are the winners of our Minnesota 2016 Buddy Bench Contest! Their entry was submitted by Becki Church, EBD Instructor for the Freshwater Education District. This is an excerpt from her contest entry: “One of the skills practiced each day throughout the day is interactions with others, including staff and peers. We also teach empathy and how to include others in play. We will use the Buddy Bench in our playground area to encourage students who are feeling left out, lonely, or upset to go to that designated area.” The video below was submitted as well.

Congratulations to Jordan Creek Elementary in West Des Moines, IA! They are the winners of our 2016 Buddy Bench Contest in Iowa! Principal Paul Wenger writes, “Nationally, the focus is on ‘anti-bullying’. The conversation is about stopping, standing up to, or stomping out bullying. The focus should shift from the problem to the solution. Students identified that being nice is a powerful way to prevent bullying. Instead of anti-bully, the focus should be pro-friend.” The video below was also submitted.
